The beam diffuser is developed as a mean to enable a FEL beam to be stopped by a conventional Cu alloy beam stop: The active optical component of the beam stop is a nano-polished steel rod, diameter 20mm with a length of up to 1.5m, that is coated with a protective B4C layer. Further, the steel rod is axially bent to a radius of 100m such that the beam will be diffused in 2 dimensions. The rod is introduced to the beam path by a hinged mechanism that is actuated by a pneumatic actuator. The incidence angle is freely adjustable. The position change from out/in can be done in less than 0.1s.Show more
