Refractive Optics
The use of refractive optics in the synchrotron community is becoming more and more widespread. After some reluctance, over the last couple of years, many beamline users have discovered the advantages of refractive lenses. The lenses are now close to perfect parabolic for both 2D and 1D focusing.
JJ X-Ray has been working with refractive lenses, both scientifically and commercially, for many years and share the enthusiasm of their outstanding performance regarding both ease of use, alignment, and close to perfect focusing. We both offer single crystal diamond lenses (SCD CRL´s) or standard lenses of beryllium, aluminum, and nickel.
The lenses are used in a water-cooled setup as collimating lenses upstream in the white undulator beam or in a non-cooled setup for focusing of the monochromatic beam.
The total focal f length of a stack of N lenses in the thin lens approximation is given by:
where R is the apex radius of curvature, and δ is the real part of the refractive index.
